Protect Your Cat and Yourself

Cats, especially those who have been abandoned are vulnerable to diseases. Kittens that have gone astray from the group are likely to be week and catch infections. When you made up your mind to foster these pitiful creatures, quarantine them first for two weeks and bring them to the veterinarian. Since you don’t know where they exactly came from, chances are, they may carry parasites and germs harmful to your family and other pets. Take note that the environment where your new pet cat came from is more complex.

When getting your foster pet to the veterinarian, use a cat carrier. Trip might be new for your pet. This can cause dizziness and nausea. A cat carrier is important because it can keep control of your pet while in travel. This is very helpful especially when there is no one to keep an eye on your cat or kitten while you are driving.

Fostering a feline takes a number or responsibilities. This includes keep your new pet healthy and happy. The first necessary step is to visit a veterinary. This is to determine if your newly found pet is suffering from any cat diseases or not. If not, at least you will know what preventive measures to take. However, if unfortunately your cat is ill, the veterinarian will prescribe medicines or treatments. Also, when you arrived home; it is necessary to provide your new pet with its own cat bed. This is not to infect your other pets. Remember, cats have good hygiene. Your pet cat will appreciate if you will provide its own cat bed. Furthermore, a clean environment will hasten its recovery.

The hard truth is cats can actually carry disease that might put human’s health at risk. For example, cats can carry rabies. Rabies is an acute viral disease of the nervous system of warm-blooded animals. Rabies is very fatal if the virus reaches the brain. Indeed, rabies is lethal.

People who are likely to catch diseases from cats are:

  • infants
  • elderly people
  • children under the age of 5
  • HIV positive people
  • organ transplant patients
  • cancer patients or those who are undergoing chemotherapy

Regardless of cats can bring diseases, various organizations support that cats can actually contribute to the health and wellness of people. Some cat owners confess that their pets relieve their stress. With their pet cat around, owners feel more safety and happy. For them, their pet cat is part of their family. Therefore, it’s not surprising to hear or read news about people leaving an enormous amount of wealth to their pets.

To prevent getting infections or diseases from cats, wash your hands thoroughly after any contact especially if you touched a cat stool. When washing, use soap and rub your hands together. Then use running water to wash out soap and other particles. Second, avoid cat scratches and bites. If a cat scratches or bites you, wash it with soap and running water as soon as possible. Afterwards, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. Lastly, vaccinate your pets against rabies.
